As always, let me have your thoughts. You can reach me at marvin@pipoa.net or call me at 469-231-3485. You can also call the Padre Isles Property Owners Association (PIPOA) office with any questions you have at 361-949-7025.

Towing- Last week, the PIPOA towed 13 vehicles and four trailers from the boat ramp parking lots. One interesting case occurred; the parking lot monitor spoke with someone launching a boat with no sticker on their vehicle or trailer. The person was advised not to park on the boat ramp parking lot because they had no sticker, and subsequently, they would be towed away. Despite this warning, the person parked the vehicle and trailer on the lot. This was done with the monitor standing there watching. That is, the person parked their vehicle, got in their boat, and went off into the canal, absolutely defying the warning. The vehicle and trailer were towed away. As Forrest Gump said, “stupid is as stupid does.” You can’t make this up, folks.

You can purchase your vehicle and boat trailer stickers at the PIPOA office located at 14015 Fortuna Bay Drive. The vehicle sticker is $5.00, and the trailer sticker is $10.00.

Palm Trees- The PIPOA office is receiving calls requesting the palm trees in the medians be trimmed. The PIPOA has been in consultation with arborists regarding the effect of the drought on palm trees. The PIPOA has been advised not to trim the palm trees in the drought and heat. According to the experts, palm trees obtain both moisture and nutrients from the dying frons. The palms will be trimmed sometime in the fall if the drought breaks.

Fences- There are currently three cases where property owners have built a fence around an unimproved lot. That is a fence around an empty lot. The most recent State Law allows property owners to do this. Generally speaking, the fences are unattractive. However, the PIPOA covenants prohibit the use of empty lots for anything other than a residence built on the property. Therefore, storing equipment and other materials is not allowed. The PIPOA will be sending letters to property owners that turn their empty lots into a storage facility or some type of commercial business. The PIPOA hopes for cooperation from these property owners so that legal action is not necessary.

Hurricane- Are you prepared for storms and a hurricane? Please prepare by removing potential projectiles from your property. In addition, repairing your decks and docks should be a priority so that portions of the decks and docks do not end up in the canals or worse.

Short-term rentals (STRs)- The PIPOA has received word that a City Inspector has gone to a property in the RS-6 Residential zone and interviewed a short-term rental tenant. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time the City has actually taken this type of investigative action. Hopefully, this is the beginning of serious enforcement by the City.

Audit- The PIPOA has invited the auditing firm Park-Fowler to give a brief presentation at the August Board meeting. All members are invited to attend and receive firsthand information. Once again, the PIPOA has received a favorable audit report. The audit will be available on the PIPOA website next week.

Board Meeting- The next PIPOA Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at 5:30 pm at the Padre Island Baptist Church located across from Whataburger. All PIPOA members are invited to attend.
